Big Ideas & Guiding Questions

The following is a list of ideas/statements that could be used as you begin to plan learning experiences for students. I try to use a big idea to to start a unit visual/mind map. Some of these statements I have used and some are ideas for future use. Each statement can be used to create questions that guide the learning.

Building competence and confidence in a variety of motor skills and movement patterns contributes to joyful participation and requires motivation, reflective practice, and grit.

Seeking out feedback to make changes and improve performance is a habit of self-directed learners.
It takes grit to keep trying when learning is difficult.
Complex skills are easier to learn when reduced to their simplest components for practice then gradually put back together again.
Combining mental and physical practice can result in maximum improvement.​
Learning = (Failure + Feedback) x (Changes + Practice + Perseverance)
Becoming skillful requires thoughtful practice, repetition, and time.
Improvement requires reflection and evaluation.
Using "think-abouts" when I am learning helps make "body look-fors" a permanent part of me.
Coordination, control, consistency, planning, accuracy and adaptability are all measures of skilled performers.
Spending time practicing technique for efficient movement makes it easier to use skills successfully during game play.
Beginning by learning thoughtfully and deliberately will result in smooth efficiency.

Learning about the bodies' parts, surfaces, shapes, and actions provides a foundation for building skillful movers.

Our bodies are made up of different parts and surfaces. We can use these parts and surfaces to create different shapes, lead movement, support our bodies and transfer weight.
We can change how we move through space by choosing different directions, pathways, ranges and levels.
We can use our bodies to perform different locomotor movements and non-locomotor movements.
We can use our bodies to perform manipulative skills and maneuver weight.

Choosing to lead a physically active lifestyle is preventative medicine you never have to pay a dime for. Time is the coin that is wisely spent on movement and exercise.

In order for anyone to sustain a physically active lifestyle they must discover the activities that they enjoy.
Exercise is preventative medicine. It won't cost you a dime. You pay for it with your time. The rewards are priceless.
There are no parts of the body that do not benefit from movement and exercise.

Creating and discovering new and different ways to move requires making changes in time, space, force, and flow.

There is alway more than one way to get there.
We create different qualities of movements by thinking about changing time, force, space, and flow.

There are scientific principles that govern human movement. We can use an understanding of these principles to improve performance.

To control the amount of force applied to an object you must consider the number of muscles involved, the size of the muscles involved, the distance through which the muscles contract, and the sequencing, timing and speed of movement.
Motion is power.
When all forces  are applied sequentially in the desired direction with proper timing, maximum force can be achieved. 
Force is everywhere. It can be created, received, resisted, redirected and stopped.
The angle of rebound after a collision depends on point of contact, spin prior to contact, friction between surfaces and elasticity.
​To lessen rebound after a collision you must increase the distance over which force is absorbed, increase the time over which force is absorbed or increase the size of the receiving area.
Balance is control.
Stability is firmness of balance or resistance to change and depends on the center of gravity and its relationship to the base of support.
Balance is control and is essential for proper execution of a skill.
Three factors affecting the flight of a projectile are propelling force, point and angle of force application, and the force of gravity.
Spin is created when force is applied off center. A spinning object will rebound from a surface in the direction it was spinning.

Tactical thinkers can read the given situation then use their skills to react and adapt successfully to the ever changing game situations.

The ability to successfully adapt to a changing environment is a mark of a skilled performer.
Games people enjoy as they seek to lead an active lifestyle fall into 5 categories. Although the skills may change in games within a category each has a common set of strategies and tactics.
Developing an understanding of the strategies and tactics of a game will help you in other games within that same category.
Assessing  your opponent's strengths and weaknesses can give you a competitive advantage.
Although the skills may change, all ______ (pursue/evade games, games of invasion, target games, net/wall games, fielding games) have common strategies and tactics.

Social intelligence, self control, grit, and empathy are the skills required by all to create positive experiences for all. 

My fun is not more important that your fun. I am in charge of me. I can control my words, body and actions to help create a positive experience for everyone.
How can we create a safe, fun class  where everyone can learn and build new skills?
The game is never more important than the people playing it.
Lead, don't push.
Being part of a team comes with rights and responsibilities.

People enjoy physical activity for different reasons. 

Physical activities offer opportunities to improve health, set challenging goals, express oneself, and interact with others.
