Brain Basics & Beyond
These pages are designed as a place to share what I've learned about the science of learning. It is intended for all educators interested in learning a bit more about the principles of brain compatible learning.
On the first day of the 6-day Teaching With The Brain In Mind course I took with Eric Jensen of Jensen Learning, he described brain compatible/based learning as "An informed process of using practical strategies based on sound principles derived from research. It's doing what makes sense based on how the brain learns best." All week we learned the principles and experienced the strategies. Each day was carefully crafted so we could experience first hand what it feels like to be part of a classroom where close attention is paid to how the brain learns. The experience hooked my interest and motivated me to further my understanding and began reading as much as possible about the brain and brain compatible learning. During my teaching career I worked to plan learning experiences for my students that apply the principles of brain compatible teaching and learning. Essentially, in these pages I have created a way to share what I've learned about the science of learning. Each page includes a combination of the following: an overview, bulleted notes, thoughts and reflections, selected examples, videos, and resources for further learning. Access the pages from the drop down menu. or by clicking on the links below.
As you explore the pages found in this section you will see this symbol followed by some guiding questions that can be used as you plan learning experiences. I believe there is always more than one way to get there and many creative ways yet to be discovered. I hope these questions help you discover new and innovative ways to motivate and inspire your students to become lifelong movers and learners.
